Boys Session '09 Day 4

The weather today decided to give us a shock during fourth period in the form of a heavy downpour that lasted a mere couple of minutes.  We've been pretty lucky with weather this session and a little downpour didn't dampen the campers' spirits (although it may have dampened some towels). Today for dinner we had ravioli and tonight for supper we will be "eating out."  For those new to "eat out," on Wednesdays and Saturdays of each session (Saturdays other than the last, of course), the campers sit at tables other than their own and without any other person from their cabin.  This night gives us a chance to meet others that we may not have met and a different eating atmosphere.

Boys Session '09 Day 3

Last night, the campers had their first taste of the many Asto Wamah variations on the classic game of dodgeball.  Medical War, a game that allows hit players reentry into the game after they have been rescued by one of two "medics," was our first outdoor evening program of the session.  True to boys camp, the game was quite competitive and very fun! Today for dinner we had meatballs and gravy, and tonight's supper will be pulled pork.  For evening program, provided the weather is as beautiful as it has been all day, we will be up on the AField playing Capture the Flag (a camp favorite).

Boating, swimming, arts and crafts, and sports classes are going fantastically as we all get used to the daily schedule of Asto Wamah.

Boys Session '09 Day 2

Today was our first full day of the session and first year campers got a glance of what the coming days will hold.  Fortunately, the weather was absolutely gorgeous.  We started the day with cereal and Sue's famous streusel bread. In preparation for Camp Asto Wamah's 100th Anniversary celebration, in Arts and Crafts, each cabin is refinishing retired paddles and oars from years past.  Each paddle/oar will be displayed on the last day of camp and will show each cabin's own unique personality.  Upon completion, the paddles will be judged by Asto Wamah staff members, and a winner of "Camp's Coolest Paddle" will be chosen and rewarded at campfire on the final night of camp.

Anticipation is building as the campers wait to find out what we will be playing for evening program tonight, for last night we were unable to go up to the AField due to wet conditions (although the Buckets of Fun proved to be a fantastic substitute).  Tune in tomorrow for the game update and scores!

Coed Session '09 - Day 6

It's been a very rainy last full day here at camp. We had all of our classes today although not all boaters and swimmers were able to actually go out in the lake. Some boating classes played Bingo and swimming classes played Scattergories. We played a counselor trivia game this afternoon and now campers are indoors playing board games for activity period.

This evening for supper is meatball grinders. Tonight for evening program we will have our awards camp fire. Campers will recieve "year awards," for how many years they have been a camper, as well as certificates of achievement in boating or swimming if they passed the level they took classes in this session. We will also have a staff skit and enjoy s'mores for our evening snack.

A reminder that tomorrow morning your campers can be picked up as early as possible and NO LATER THAN 10:30 AM. Thank you so much for sending your children to spend the past week here at Camp Asto Wamah with us! We've had a wonderful time!

Coed Session '09 - Day 5

The temperature really heated up today at camp which made it a great day to go in the lake. We had all of our classes as scheduled today. Everyone is working hard on perfecting their skills in boating and swimming. For activity period campers played soccer, jumped off the tower, and took archery lessons if they hadn't already in sports class.

This evening for dinner we enjoyed chicken patties as our main meal and cheesecake for dessert. Tonight for the game we will play "Pirates."

Tomorrow is our last full day. I can't believe we've nearly reached the end!

Coed Session '09 - Day 4

We had a normal morning of classes today, but this afternoon we had a nice change in our schedule with the performance of a special guest! A couple brought their Chesapeake Bay Retriever that is trained as a tracking dog to come show off his skills for us. He was able to locate hidden objects by scent. He even tracked one of our own counselors through the woods. The kids really enjoyed meeting him! Just as the performance was ending we had some rain start. There isn't any thunder but since the rain hasn't let up yet we're inside playing board games for activity period.

This evening for dinner we're having "eat out" which means the campers will all switch tables sitting with counselors that are not their own and with no other campers from their cabin. This way kids and staff members have an opportunity to meet people they haven't yet!

We're not sure what we'll play for evening program tonight, it all depends on the weather!

Coed Session '09 - Day 3

It has been a very hot day here at Asto Wamah but still a great day for camp! We've made sure everyone has had plenty of water to drink and that everyone has been in the lake as much as possible. We had all of our classes this morning as usual and are finishing up fourth period right now. For activity period today campers can choose from jumping off the tower, playing aquarium games and sailing on the camp sail boat, The Hunter.

We will have tacos for dinner this evening followed by apple crisp, a camp favorite dessert. Tonight for evening program we will try again to play "Capture the Flag" and hopefully the weather cooperates.

Tomorrow will be a very exciting day for everyone as we will have a few changes in our schedule. We will start the morning with a "movie themed breakfast." The fun will take place at flag raising before the morning meal. By then each cabin will have chosen a movie to dress up as characters from and do a brief skit of. It's a great way for campers and their counselors to work together and have a great time!

In the afternoon we are having a very special guest come to do a presentation for the campers, but I'll have to tell you about that tomorrow!

Coed Session '09 - Day 2

We had fantastic weather all day today! It was warm with a cool breeze coming off the lake. We had all of our classes including swimming, boating, sports and arts and crafts. It was particularly good weather for sailing! During activity period campers jumped off the tower, played soccer on the A-Field and had a jump rope contest outside the lodge. Just after we finished our supper of grilled cheese and tomato soup a storm came our way. We would have played "Capture the Flag" tonight, but given the weather we are inside playing "Buckets of Fun!" In this game campers compete in cabin groups in different games including "Play dough-nary," "Charades," "Password" and a few others.

We'll have snack and sing a few songs after the game and hopfully by then the weather will have cleared to allow for an easy bed time.

Coed Session '09 - Day 1

It's the first day of our coed session and we're having a great time! We have 50 new campers this session so it's a new experience for many. Campers have all settled into their cabins and made several friends already. We had swim classification for all the new campers this afternoon followed by a general swim. We had our usual first night dinner of hotdogs with brownies for dessert and tonight, as long as the weather holds, we will play our usual first night evening program of the dodge ball game Medical War.

Tomorrow morning starts our regular camp schedule. Let's hope we have nice weather for it!

Second Session Girls '09- Day 13

It's the last day of the second session and we have had beautiful weather for it! We had all of our classes as scheduled this morning. Now for activity period kids who just passed into level 4 are enjoying the privilege of jumping off the Tower and many campers are out in sailboats for the last time or finishing their arts and crafts projects. We had a lovely banquet last night and although the weather prevented us from having our candlelight service outside, we had a very nice service indoors. Tonight is our awards camp fire where campers will receive certificates for passing swimming or boating and ribbons for placements in track meet events. We'll sing songs and have s'mores; a great way to wrap up the session!

We've loved having your girls here with us these last two weeks! Please remember that they can be picked up tomorrow NO LATER THAN 10:30 AM. Thank you so much for sending your kids here to learn to be girls from Asto Wamah!

Second Session Girls '09-Day 12

It was cloudy today but we managed to have all of our classes as usual. Instead of general swim we played King Dodge Ball on the A-Field. It's activity period right now. A few brave souls are jumping off the Tower and out in sail boats and the rest are playing board games in the upper lodge. Many people are getting ready for this evening's Banquet. We will have our second session banquet at 6:30 p.m. We will enjoy a Thanksgiving meal, watch a slideshow of pictures from this session and campers will recieve "year awards" for how many years they have come to camp. We will conclude the evening with a candlelight service.

Tomorrow is our last full day of classes! We hope the weather is nice, but no matter what we will make the most of the end of the session!

Second Session Girls '09-Day 11

It was a very rainy day yesterday but we had a great time just the same. Swimming classes played Scatergories, boating classes played Bingo and sports classes played indoor games. We had several board games out for activity period and for evening program we had a fabulous talent show! The campers favorite skit seemed to be the kitchen staff's staging of the book, "If You Give a Moose a Muffin." Today it has been a bit overcast but our classes have been able to go on as scheduled. Today for lunch is meatloaf and the camp favorite dessert, vanilla pudding pie. Tonight we will have our last game for evening program of the session since tomorrow evening is Banquet and Friday is Camp Fire. The session is flying by so quickly!

Second Session Girls '09-Day 9

We had great weather for our track and field day yesterday. We had all of our usual events including the softball throw, standing and running long jumps, 50 yard dash, 1/2 mile marathon, swim races and Indian War Relay. We also brought back for the first time in several years the 220 and 440 yard relays. It was a wonderful day! Today we returned to our normal class schedule. The seniors tye-dyed shirts for arts and crafts which was a lot of fun, and right now for activity period campers are out in sail boats, jumping off the tower or going for a run among other things.

This evening we will play a game on the field although we're not sure which one yet. Tomorrow night for evening program will be our Asto Wamah talent night! Everyone is very excited getting ready to perform. We may even see some staff on the stage!

Tonight for dinner is pizza. Less than an hour until the dinner bell!

Second Session Girls '09-Day 7

What an exciting afternoon we've had here at Asto Wamah today! The seniors nature class found a dead carp, nearly 3 feet long and approximately 30 pounds resting on the bottom of the lake. With the help of Eric, our nature director, they removed the giant fish from the water! The campers have been crowded on the dock taking pictures of it for several minutes. Other than that we've enjoyed a normal day with very nice weather. We chose green and white captains for tomorrow's track meet today. We're all very excited!

Tonight we're having hotdogs for dinner. We're not sure what evening program will be yet but I'm sure we'll have a great time!

Second Session Girls '09-Day 6

Well the thunderstorms last night were pretty crazy but we all managed to get a good night's sleep and enjoy the nice weather today. sailboatAsto Wamah got a new sail boat today and the kids are working on coming up with a name for it! Right now it's activity period and many campers are working on getting ready for tonight's carnival! The theme of it is underwater and there will be a lot of fun carnival activities for the kids to enjoy. Tonight for dinner is grilled chesse and tomato soup! We're at the end of the first week and still having a wonderful time!

Second Session Girls '09-Day 4

It was another day of gorgeous weather! We had our classes as normal and a general swim this afternoon. We've just finished fourth period class and are on to activity period. For dinner this evening we'll be having "eat out." What this means is that all campers sit at a table not with their counselors or any other camper from their cabin. This way campers meet new people and make new friends.

Last night for evening program we decided to play Triad instead of Spies and Smugglers. Triad is a game of soccer with three goals instead of two. The camp divides into three teams to play; sometimes all campers play and sometimes we play in age groups (Hilltop, Lakeside, Seniors.) Everyone had a great time. Tonight will be our traditional game of Spies and Smugglers.

Second Session Girls '09-Day 3

Once again we had lovely weather today. For activity period today our counselors offered some fabulous options including going out on the Hunter, our camp sail boat, and Salsa dancing lessons. There was also a game of volleyball on the A Field and of course, the camper favorite, jumping off the tower. Tonight for dinner is tacos and Sue's delicious apple crisp. This evening we will play Spies and Smugglers. We're already half way through our first week and having a fantastic time!

Second Session Girls '09-Day 2

Today was a great day on the lake! We had all classes today including swimming, smallcraft, sports and arts and crafts. In arts and crafts campers are working on bags, bracelets and baskets. Supplies for pillows arrive tomorrow and the kids seem pretty excited for that. Right now it's activity period. Campers are jumping off the tower and playing games in the aquarium among other things. Tonight we will play another game on the field, perhaps "capture the flag." We're glad to have had such nice weather for the first few days.

It's only been a day but everyone seems to have settled in just fine. We're having chicken fajitas for dinner tonight! I'm sure everyone will have worked up an appetite with the afternoon's activities by the time the dinner bell rings.

Second Session Girls '09-Day 1

Campers for the second session arrived this afternoon and we're off and running already! All new campers took a swimming test to see what level they will take classes in and we had a general swim this afternoon. Campers also decided whether they will be taking archery, tennis or both during the session as part of their sports class. Cabins are finishing up tours of the camp right now and getting ready for dinner which will be hotdogs followed by brownies as always. Then in keeping with first night tradition we will play Medical War on the A-Field.

The weather forecast is very promising for the week to come so we're hopeful all classes will be uninterupted this week and that we'll be able to spend plenty of time playing outside!

First Session Girls '09-Day 13

Yesterday was a fun, albeit unusually cold, day at Asto Wamah. We played a few fun games in the afternoon and enjoyed the camp favorite dessert, Chocolate Pudding Pie, after lunch. Last night was our end of session banquet. Campers recieved Birch Barkers and year awards as we enjoyed a Thanksgiving meal. We ended the evening with a candle light service.

Today is our final day of classes. Tonight we will have Awards Camp Fire for our final evening program. Campers will recieve certificates of achievment if they passed swimming or boating and ribbons if they placed in any track meet events.

Tomorrow morning the campers go home. Don't forget that they can be picked up no earlier than 8:30 am and NO LATER THAN 10:30 AM.

It's been a wonderful session! We're so glad all you parents chose to send your girls here to be Girls from Asto Wamah!
